El desarrollo conceptual que hasta ahora se ha dado en enfermería refleja la búsqueda insistente de un marco propio que fundamente la identidad de la disciplina y la profesión y que disminuya su dependencia histórica de otras ciencias de la salud. En ese sentido, los diferentes abordajes conceptuales en enfermería nos conducen, de manera sustancial, no solo a ver al ser huma no como un ser holístico e integral, sino que interactúan con su ambiente social y natural y con un nuevo lenguaje que entiende sistemas más complejos e integradores en una comunidad global. El hecho de que el sistema conceptual se haya centrado en el ser humano como fenómeno de interés para enfermería nos muestra que estamos iniciando su reconocimiento. Esto nos impulsa a seguir descubriendo lo que es esencial para enfermería y este descubrimiento, al parecer, continuará en el siglo XXI cuando ya empiezan a aparecer nuevas teorías. Indudablemente, la rápida innovación tecnológica, la globalización marcada por el conocimiento y el capitalismo transnacional, y la información sobre el cuidado de la salud presente en la red de comunicaciones, propenden por un desarrollo conceptual en enfermería más acelerado y en el cual la profesión y la disciplina estarán ajustando y desarrollando sus paradigmas. No obstante la aceleración de este conocimiento, no podemos perder de vista los límites que podríamos enfrentar y que se relacionan con la complejidad del fenómeno mismo del conocimiento en enfermería, esto es, con su interdependencia y su multidimensionalidad.

The conceptual development that up till now has been given, in nursing reflects the insistent search for its own framework that grants identity to the discipline and the profession and that diminishes its historic dependence on other sciences in the health sector. In that sense, the different conceptual approaches in nursing drive us, in a sustan ial way, not only to see the human being like a holistic and integral being , but also, interacting with his or hers social and natural environment and with a new language that understands more complex and integrative systems in a global community. The fact that the conceptual system has been centered on the human being as a focal interest point for nursing shows us that we are starting to recognize it. This is forcing us to discover what is essential for nursing. And this discovery, ap parently, will continue during the 21st century when new theories are already coming up. Undoubtedly, the rapid technological innovations, the globalization marked by know how, the transnational capitalism and the information on health care available in communications’ networks, seek a more accelerated conceptual development in nursing where the profesión and the discipline ad just and evolve in terms of its the new paradigms. Nevertheless, the acceleration of this know how can not alter our view on the limits that we could face and that are linked to the complexity of the very same phenomenon of nursing know ledge, i.e. with its interdependence and its multidimentional character.
