    This article is an excerpt from a doctoral research about the political culture and expansion of universities in Brazil, from 2003 to 2013, and aims to present a summary of the trajectory of the "university" institution in the Western world, since the sixteenth century, and the models that were subsequent to it and implemented in several countries and Brazil. The main bibliografy focuses on the studies of S. Schwartzman, M. Chauí, R. Motta and Boaventura Santos. Thus, the problematization is centered on a brief reflection on the history of the universities in Brazil and its expansion in the last 20 years, which has expanded its social function from forming elites to democratizing agency. Finally, we will use data from the expansion of the public university in Brazil in the 2000s.

    O presente artigo visa apresentar um breve resumo da trajetória da instituição “universidade” e dos modelos que lhe foram subsequentes e implementados ao longo dos anos em diversos países. Os principais modelos apresentados são o inglês, francês, alemão e americano. A partir disso, é feita uma reflexão acerca do objetivo-fim da universidade e qual sua função social, questionando sua relação e autonomia frente aos governos dos países em que se encontram. Por fim, uma breve reflexão sobre a universidade no Brasil é realizada e, com ela, um questionamento sobre sua expansão e reorganização das funções sociais atribuídas nos últimos anos.
