    En esta investigación se analiza el papel que tuvo el Patronato indiano, específicamente, en la organización coordinada entre el poder civil y eclesiástico de diversos rituales y ceremonias tras desastres extremos, como terremotos y erupciones volcánicas, durante la época de los Austrias. Este mecanismo de actuación, que habitualmente solo se ha considerado como el privilegio de la Corona española a la presentación de los cargos de la jerarquía eclesiástica, realmente, también se utilizó como una estrategia efectiva para alcanzar el orden social y dar una respuesta al caos y miedo que se generaba en la población, ofreciendo una solución ante estos acontecimientos. Así, desde el contenido sobre del Patronato desarrollado en la Recopilación de las Leyes de Indias, y su evolución desde 1508 hasta el vicariato en la época Felipe II y en el marco de la tesis providencialista asociada al origen de los fenómenos naturales en aquella época, es posible encontrar su aplicación tras desastres originados por fenómenos naturales. Las fuentes utilizadas han sido variadas y se procedió al cruce de las mismas para obtener pruebas que demostraran esta idea central.

    This research analyzes the role played by the Patronato indiano, specifically, in the coordinated organization between the civil and ecclesiastical power of various rituals and ceremonies after extreme disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions during the time of the Habsburgs. This mechanism of action, which has usually only been considered as the privilege of the Spanish Crown to the presentation of the charges of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, was actually also used as an effective strategy to achieve social order and respond to chaos and fear that was generated in the population, offering a solution to these events. Thus, from the content on the Patronato developed in the Compilation of the Laws of the Indies, and its evolution from 1508 to the vicariate in the era of Felipe II and within the framework of the providentialist thesis associated with the origin of natural phenomena at that time, It is possible to find its application after disasters caused by natural phenomena. The sources used have been varied and they were crossed to obtain evidence that demonstrated this central idea.
