El año 2021 conmemora el setenta aniversario de la implantación del Documento Nacional de Identidad. Este artículo recorrerá la primera mitad del siglo xx para constatar su origen. Su objetivo es ubicarlo dentro del contexto político, económico y social reinante en la España de posguerra, y, por ende, con los años más tenebrosos de la dictadura franquista. Surcaremos sus recodos más opacos para mostrar cómo fue concebido bajo un planteamiento totalitario con el fin de ejecutar un control social absoluto sobre la población española.

The year 2021 commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the implementation of the Spanish National Identity Document. This arti-cle embarks upon the first half of the twentieth century in order to un-cover its origins. The objective is to place its emergence within the po-litical, economic and social milieu of postwar Spain, the darkest years of the Franco dictatorship. We will navigate its most opaque twists and turns to show how it was conceived within a totalitarian ethos that aimed to exert absolute social control over the population.
