    Se presenta un marco general que sirve para comprender la situación de los museos de nuestro entorno desde una perspectiva basada en las concepciones del museo y patrimonio cultural actuales. Desde este posicionamiento se trata de destacar alguno de los principales desafíos que tienen los museos como instituciones del patrimonio cultural hoy día y que, independientemente de su titularidad, ámbito de influencia o carácter, han de afrontar en las sociedades del conocimiento actuales. Por otra parte, estas mismas situaciones pueden suponer oportunidades para la redefinición de aspectos teóricos y prácticos que necesitan ser renovados. Comprender estas dinámicas y concienciarse de la necesidad de generarlas quizá sea más fácil que implementarlas porque los condicionantes son múltiples y de índole variada: políticos, económicos o administrativos. Un primer paso es identificarlas y tratar de revertir los posibles inconvenientes para facilitar cambios que de otra forma podrían suponer un esfuerzo mucho mayor o ser, incluso, imposibles.

    This paper shows a general framework that serves to understand the situation of the museums in our context from a perspective based on current conceptions of museums and cultural heritage. From this position, it is a matter of highlighting some of the main challenges that museums experience as cultural heritage institutions, and have to face in today’s knowledge societies, regardless of their ownership, sphere of influence or character. On the other hand, these same situations can be opportunities for the redefinition of theoretical and practical aspects that need to be renewed. Understanding these dynamics and being aware of the need to generate them may be easier than their implementation because the determining factors involved are multiple and varied: political, economic or administrative. A first step is to identify them and try to reverse the possible inconveniences in order to facilitate changes that could otherwise be difficult or, even, impossible.
