Este empeño por definir a los museos podría entenderse como un síntoma de ciertas dificultades para auto-reconocerse e identificar una esencia común y diferencial que distinga a los museos de otros estamentos culturales o educativos. Esto último puede tener que ver con la importante y relativamente reciente evolución de la función social de los museos, así como también con el meteórico crecimiento de ciertos tipos de museos, así como también con el auge del turismo.

The creation and regular review of the definition of museum is a characteristic matter of this sector that is not common to find in other spheres of culture. This effort to define museums could be understood as a symptom of certain difficulties in self-recognition and identifiying a common and differential essence that distinguishes museums from other cultural or educational establishments. The latter may have to do with the important and relatively recent evolution of the social function of museums, as well as the meteoric growth of certain types of museums, and the rise of tourism.
