    Partindo-se do conhecimento da experiência dos portugueses nos contactos com povos não europeus por ocasião da chegada a terras do Atlântico Sul, pretende-se analisar o espanto que a nova terra e os seus habitantes provocaram nos portugueses, bem assim a curiosidade que a maravilha da terra lhes causou e que os levou a adentrá-la e a conhe cê-la. Com a fixação dos portugueses, iniciou-se uma corrente de busca de Portugal, sobretudo o saber da sua universidade, originando uma plêiade de cientistas brasileiros, que deixaram obra notável em diversos ramos do saber, particularmente através das célebres viagens filosóficas do século XVIII. Donde, a existência de colecções literárias e científicas na Universidade de Coimbra.

    Departing from the knowledge of the experience of the Portuguese in their contacts with non-Europeans upon their arrival to the South Atlantic lands, we intend to analyze not only the astonishment that the new land and its inhabitants provoked in the Portuguese, but also the curiosity that the wonders of the land caused them and that led them to enter and to know it. With the settling of the Portuguese, a current of search for knowledge began from Portugal, especially from its university, originating a plethora of Brazilian scientists, who left remarkable work in various fields of knowledge. Particularly, the famous naturalistic journeys of the XVIII century were at the origin of literary and scientific collections at the University of Coimbra.
