La gran transformación que sufren los principales puertos del mundo desde los años setenta y ochenta del siglo XX deja obsoletos muelles, instalaciones y edificios que, a menudo, forman de un rico patrimonio portuario. En algunos casos son conservados, se rehabilitan y se reutilizan; en otros, son derribados, abandonados o transformados de tal forma que se pierde una huella física del pasado portuario. Aunque el estudio del patrimonio portuario como parte destacada del patrimonio histórico es relativamente reciente, comienza a haber experiencias que permiten formular políticas y estrategias para su conservación y proyección futura

Thje great transformation that the world's main ports have undergone since the 1970s and 1980s has rendered docks, facilities and buildings obsolete, which in many cases form part of a rich port heritage. In sorne cases, they are conserved, rehabilitated and reused; in others, they are molished, abandoned or transformed in such a way that a physical trace of the port past is lost. Although the study of the port heritage asan outstanding part of the historical heritage is tively recent, there are already several finished projects that allow the formulation of police and strategies far its conservation and future projection.
