  • Resumen
    • Before analyzing the situation of Catalan Studies in the United States, this article examines the dire predicament of the humanities on both sides of the Atlantic. The humanities and its many disciplines have been suffering merciless attacks from administrators and, more disturbingly, from politicians. The narrative that the humanities are useless in our society is sadly gaining traction. Whether it is a case of a self-fulfilling prophecy or not, a brief, objective look at recent figures yields a dismal scenario. The situation requires urgent attention, as is evidenced by recent events at US colleges and universities. Examples include the elimination of humanities departments and the splitting of liberal arts colleges by bundling all the humanities into one unit while excising the STEM disciplines into another. In Catalan Studies, a small discipline entrenched with the losing side, the downward-spiral consequences quickly resonate. The article concludes with recommendations on how to understand our situation and suggestions for a few strategies that might help us survive.
