En esta ponencia me propongo el estudio de la novela Los cuatro espejos , del ensayista y escritor costarricense Quince Duncan, reconocido intelectual y activista de la comunidad afrodescendiente. Su obra plantea la necesidad de renovar el canon literario hispanoamericano, al incluir elementos simbólicos y estéticos de la tradición africana y al plantear una relectura de las identidades. Parte de su trabajo apunta hacia la recuperación de la tradición oral y de la espiritualidad ancestral, para poder armar un cuestionamiento crítico del trauma del racismo y de la esclavitud desde una perspectiva afrodescendiente.

This article offers an analysis of Mario Vargas Llosa’s novel Tiempos recios. In the first part, it reconstructs, based on some fundamental texts, the history of the 1944 revolution in Guatemala and its overthrow in 1954. It gives the historical and social background and describes the dynamics of the ten years that led to the US intervention in the country. A comparison is made between the historical texts and the fictional text. The article then comments on Vargas Llosa’s novel and points out the fictional elements and those that coincide with the historical facts. Finally, it comments on the conclusions reached by the Peruvian narrator with regard to the revolution of 1944 in Guatemala.
