O Apóstolo Bravo? As Relações de Poder entre D. Jerónimo Fernando e a Câmara Municipal do Funchal (1619-1643)

    This article aims to delve into the power relations exerted in the Madeiran archipelago, in the first half of the 17th century, by analyzing both conflict and cooperation between Jerónimo Fernando, bishop of Funchal (1619-1650), and the city’s municipal officials. One must begin with the bishop’s biography and his historiographical reputation – the one that gave him the moniker of Brave Apostle –, to then study several moments of dispute and agreement between the two institutions. The investigation allowed one to recognize three different periods in which collaboration or competition prevailed, while also admitting that these relations were complex and needed to be problematized.

    O presente artigo procura reconstituir as relações de poder no arquipélago da Madeira, nos inícios do século XVII. Para o concretizar, optamos por analisar as ações de conflito e cooperação entre D. Jerónimo Fernando, bispo do Funchal entre 1619 e 1650, e a Câmara Municipal do Funchal. Após uma incursão preliminar na biografia do prelado e na sua reputação historiográfica – que lhe atribuiu o cognome de Apóstolo Bravo –, analisamos diversos momentos de concórdia e de discórdia entre a Mitra e o Senado, o que permitiu estabelecer três intervalos cronológicos nos quais reina a concertação ou a dissensão, ainda que seja necessário matizar estes momentos e, por sua vez, o papel de D. Jerónimo Fernando.
