    A indústria da cal desenvolveu-se no concelho de São Vicente entre meados do século XVII e a década de 1970. Esta situação relacionou-se com a existência no sítio do Cascalho de um afloramento calcário entre os 320-475 metros de altitude. As pedreiras forneceram matéria-prima para o fabrico de cal em diversos fornos na referida freguesia e, ocasionalmente, noutras localidades. Destacamos o forno da Achada do Furtado do Barrinho, recuperado, aberto ao público em março de 2008 e integrado no Núcleo Museológico – Rota da Cal, por iniciativa do Sr. Joel Freitas, neto do último proprietário.

    The lime industry developed in the municipality of São Vicente between the middle of the 17th century and the 1970s. This situation was related with the existence of a limestone outcrop at an altitude of 320-475 meters, in a place called Cascalho. The quarries provided the raw material for the lime industry in several limekilns of the area and, sometimes, located in other regions. We highlight the limekiln in the Achada do Furtado do Barrinho, recovered, open to the public, and now incorporated in the Museum Centre – The Lime Route, in March 2008 by Mr. Joel Freitas, the grandson of the latest owner.
