    The aim of this paper is to observe literary and visual representations of a landscape that was unsettled by the storm that hit Madeira Island on 20th February, 2010. The short story book Contra a Corrente (‘Against the Current’), by Graça Alves, published in 2011, and the photo album 20 de Fevereiro, by Octávio Passos, issued in 2012, not only bear witness to the fury of the waters, but also shed a distinctive light on that natural disaster. The narratives they recount interpret the human experience of a sudden dystopic present. However, it is that very same human presence that transmits signs of hope. These moving and entrancing discourses, though marked by fiction and singular perspectives, are seen both as a resilient response to the ensuing chaos and as a means to elude the possibility of oblivion. The evocative force of the events experienced or witnessed, either imaginatively narrated or shown through the lens of a camera, will preserve the encounters, evasions and reunions that the catastrophe originated. We propose a cross-reading of the two books, in which we will question the existing implications between individual representation and cultural memory that may contribute to the construction of an integrative imaginary of this event for the benefit of future generations.

    Com este estudo, pretende-se observar representações literárias e visuais de uma paisagem transtornada pelo temporal que se abateu na Ilha da Madeira, a 20 de fevereiro de 2010. O livro de contos Contra a Corrente de Graça Alves, publicado em 2011, e o álbum de fotografias, 20 de Fevereiro, de Octávio Passos, lançado em 2012, vieram, de facto, não somente testemunhar a fúria das águas, mas também propor um olhar particular sobre essa catástrofe natural. Ambos fixam discursos que traduzem experiências humanas que um presente subitamente distópico ocasiona. Porém, é essa mesma presença humana que se constitui como portadora de sinais de esperança. Tais discursos comovedores e cativantes, ainda que ficcionados ou singularmente perspetivados, apresentam-se como processo de resiliência em resposta ao caos desencadeado e como modo de contrariar a possibilidade do esquecimento. A força evocativa do vivido ou presenciado, ora narrado com imaginação ora mostrado através de uma reportagem fotográfica, fixará os encontros, desencontros e reencontros que a catástrofe originou. Propondo uma leitura entrecruzada dos dois livros em apreço, interrogar-se-ão as implicações existentes entre a representação individual e a memória cultural, que contribuem para a construção de um imaginário integrador desse episódio com vista à sua transmissão para as gerações seguintes.
