    Tourism in Madeira has been a common subject of recent studies, which analyse the current tourist phenomenon, especially throughout the 20th century. About what took place prior to that, only a few annotations remain. We can guarantee, and are not the only ones to state, that the history of Madeira’s tourism is still in the making.Being the island of Madeira a tourist destination par excellence, it is required to know its background, the start of tourism on the Island, from an historical but also practical perspective.These days information is an indispensable tool, knowledge over this study’s subject is a must, for all those who might be interested in areas such as History, Culture, Tourism and, of course, Madeira.The main objective of the present study was to uncover the background in which Madeira’s tourism originated, emphasizing particularly on the 19th century, through the identification of 1800’s Madeira’s Tourist Supply and Demand. We do not seek to present the history of tourism on the Island, instead we intend to contribute for a better understanding of Madeira’s tourist phenomenon in a relatively recent past.In the pursuit of such objectives we called upon several sources, mainly articles and other types of literature, previously published, about the beginning of tourism on the Island. English travel literature, allusive to Madeira, provided the most valuable data.With the obtained results, we intend to answer the following questions, relative to the 19th century: (i) What was the tourist demand; (ii) Were there travelers, visitors or tourists, that came through here; (iii) Which were the factors of attractiveness; (iv) Which were the different forms in which tourism presented itself.Given the almost absolute absence of studies in this area, we deemed relevant to elaborate this article, and hope that it becomes useful for all those who, up to this point, have felt that need for information.

    O turismo na ilha da Madeira tem sido alvo de estudos recentes que analisam o fenómeno turístico atual e em relação ao século XX. Sobre o que aconteceu numa fase anterior existem apenas breves apontamentos. Podemos garantir e não somos os únicos a afirmá-lo, a história do turismo na Madeira ainda está por fazer.Sendo a ilha da Madeira um destino turístico por excelência, torna-se imprescindível conhecer os seus antecedentes, os inícios do turismo na Ilha tanto numa perspetiva histórica quanto numa vertente prática.Na atualidade a informação é uma ferramenta indispensável, o conhecimento sobre a temática do presente estudo é fundamental para todos quantos se interessem pelas áreas, entre outras, da História, da Cultura e do Turismo, na Madeira.Este estudo tem por objetivos principais descobrir os antecedentes do turismo na ilha da Madeira, com especial ênfase para o século XIX, através da identificação da Procura e Oferta Turística na Madeira Oitocentista. Não pretendemos apresentar uma história do turismo na Ilha, mas é nossa intenção contribuir para um melhor conhecimento do fenómeno turístico madeirense num passado relativamente recente.Para a prossecução destes objetivos recorremos a diferentes fontes, a artigos e outra literatura já publicada sobre o início do turismo na Ilha e tornaram-se valiosos os dados obtidos na literatura de viagens inglesa, alusiva à Madeira. Através dos resultados obtidos ao longo da pesquisa, pretendemos responder às seguintes questões, relativamente ao século XIX: (i) Qual a procura turística; (ii) Foram viajantes, visitantes ou turistas, aqueles que por aqui passaram; (iii) Quais eram os fatores de atratividade; (iv) Se existiu turismo, quais as formas de turismo.Dada a quase inexistência de estudos neste âmbito, julgamos pertinente elaborar o presente trabalho que esperamos venha a tornar-se útil para todos os que até a data têm sentido essa necessidade de informação.
