La digitalización de la energía viene produciéndose desde la década de los setenta del siglo XX y ha crecido exponencialmente en los últimos años. Las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero actuales son las más altas de la historia y deben reducirse drásticamente. La digitalización de la energía puede ayudar a esta reducción. En la Unión Europea se apoya un futuro verde y digital, por ejemplo, en los Fondos Next Generation UE, en los que se destina el 20 por ciento a la digitalización. Concretamente, la Comisión Europea ha aprobado un Plan para la Digitalización de la Energía. La Comisión Europea destaca que es necesaria una respuesta política integrada de la UE para garantizar que las inversiones en tecnologías digitales en el sistema energético contribuyan al Pacto Verde Europeo y a una Europa apta para la era digital. La Ley española 7/2021, de cambio climático y transición energética, dedica todo un artículo a la digitalización para la descarbonización de la economía, destacando la referida a la energía, incluyendo un conjunto amplio de medidas que deberían realizarse con urgencia en los próximos años.

The digitization of energy has been taking place since the 1970s and has grown exponentially in recent years. Today's greenhouse gas emissions are the highest in history and must be drastically reduced. Digitization of energy can help this reduction. In the European Union, a green and digital future is supported, for example, in the Next Generation EU Funds, in which 20 percent is allocated to digitization. Specifically, the European Commission has approved a Plan for the Digitization of Energy. The European Commission stresses that an integrated EU policy response is necessary to ensure that investments in digital technologies in the energy system contribute to the European Green Deal and a Europe fit for the digital age. Spanish Law 7/2021, on climate change and energy transition, dedicates an entire article to digitization for the decarbonization of the economy, highlighting the one referring to energy, including a broad set of measures that should be carried out urgently in the coming years.
