    Se formula un primer análisis exploratorio de las explicaciones encontradas acerca del fenómeno de las mareas, en los libros de texto de física de nivel inicial universitario. Se seleccionaron 8 textos representativos de la enseñanza de la física en este nivel. Se partió de un análisis de contenido sobre el tema y se definieron tres argumentos que sirvieron de ejes para analizarlas ideas presentadas en los documentos. Se encontró que, en la mayoría de los textos, el tema se trabaja a partir de ejercicios; en la mayoría, también, se omite la importancia de la caída libre de la Tierra para explicar el doble abultamiento mareal; y, en algunos casos, se confunden los efectos de mareas con los centrífugos producidos por la rotación sobre el propio eje. Se concluye que el abordaje de la temática en los cursos iniciales de física universitaria podría verse dificultado por la falta de profundidad y de claridad de las explicaciones disponibles en los documentos analizados.

    This worka ddresses a first exploratory analysis of the explanations foundin introductory level physics text books about the phenomenon of tides. For this purpose, 8 representative text books of physics teaching at this level were selected. Based on are view of the literature on the subject, three arguments considered central to the conceptualization of the phenomenon were defined, which served as guide lines for the analysis of the ideas presented in the considered books. It was found that in most of the books the topic is worked on through exercises; that in most of them the importance of the Earth's free fall is omitted to explain the double tidal bulge; and that in some cases the tidal effects are confused with the centrifugal effects produced by the rotation about its own axis. It is concludedth at the approachto thes ubject of tides ininitial university physics courses could be hindered by the lack of depth and clarity of the explanations available in the books analyzed.
