Resumen de Para além de Pandora: o corpo humano e cívico do feminino (séc. V-IV a. C.)

From Classical Antiquity to our days, cultural markers of gender crossed and still cross the understanding of the body. They give meaning to the identities deemed feminine and masculine in a historical context. In Classical Greek societies, such markers draw on, to a greater or lesser extent, “the race of women”, a category set apart from humanity since it was founded on the mythical figure of Pandora. However, the textual testimonies of the period, notably Aristophanic comedy and Hippocratic medicine, reveal to us that such mythical canon did not limit the possibilities of representation and the uses of female bodies, especially concerning married women. Thus, this article aims to show that both Aristophanes and Hippocrates express a masculine thought capable of including the feminine as an active participant in the construction of the human body and the Athenian civic body.

Da Antiguidade clássica aos nossos dias, o entendimento do corpo foi e ainda é atravessado por marcadores culturais de gênero, os quais conferem sentido às identidades consideradas femininas e masculinas em um dado contexto. Nas sociedades da Grécia Clássica, tais marcadores baseavam-se, em maior ou menor medida, na “raça das mulheres”, uma categoria apartada da humanidade, pois fundada na figura mítica de Pandora. No entanto, os testemunhos textuais do período, notadamente a comédia aristofânica e a medicina hipocrática, nos revelam que tal cânone mítico não cingiu as possibilidades de representação e os usos dos corpos femininos, especialmente em relação às mulheres casadas. Assim, este artigo tem por objetivo demonstrar que tanto Aristófanes quanto Hipócrates expressam um pensamento masculino capaz de incluir o feminino como participante ativo na construção do corpo humano e do corpo cívico ateniense.
