    Objective: To define the prevalence of DM cases in the municipality of Santarém, until the month of November 2010 to characterize the profile of the diabetic population in the urban area ofSantarem on the epidemiology and treatment of these patients. Methodology: To meet the objectives of this epidemiological study, carried out a search in the database (BRASIL, 2010a;b) and documentary at the Municipal Health Santarém (SEMSA, 2010). To characterize the profile of the diabetic population in the urban area of Santarem, a form applied to a sample of 189 patients enrolled in 19 health units in the urban area of Santarem. Results: The prevalence of DM in the municipality of Santarém until November 2010 amounted to 4215 cases and was significantly higher (p <0.0001) than the state. As the profile of diabetic patients in the urban area ofSantarem, there was a greater distribution of women, with a predominance of patients between 61 and 65, with more than 5 years of diagnosis of diabetes, mostly Type II. We also observed a high prevalence of patients with combined diabetes / hypertension. Regarding the type of treatment, there was a varying widely, including both targeted measures by health professionals, the initiative taken by the patients own. The combination therapy was more frequent among drug treatment and diet. The practice of folic acid was always observed in combination with other therapeutic measures, revealing his character supporting this process and is almost always performed without guidance from a professional physical education.

    Objetivo: Definir a prevalência dos casos de DM no município de Santarém, até o mês de novembro de 2010 e caracterizar o perfil da população diabética na zona urbana de Santarém quanto aos aspectos epidemiológicos e do tratamento destes pacientes. Metodologia: Para se atender aos objetivos epidemiológicos deste estudo, realizou-se uma pesquisa em banco de dados (BRASIL, 2010a;b) e documental junto à Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Santarém (SEMSA, 2010). Para se caracterizar o perfil da população diabética na zona urbana de Santarém, aplicou-se um formulário, a uma amostra de 189 pacientes atendidos nas 19 unidades de saúde da zona urbana do município de Santarém. Resultados: A prevalência do DM no município de Santarém até novembro de 2010 correspondeu a 4215 casos, sendo significativamente maior (p<0.0001) do que a estadual. Quanto ao perfil dos pacientes diabéticos da zona urbana de Santarém, observou-se uma distribuição maior de mulheres, com predomínio de pacientes entre 61 e 65 anos e com mais de 5 anos de diagnóstico de diabetes, sendo a maioria do tipo II. Observou-se também uma grande prevalência de pacientes com a conjugação diabetes/HAS. Com relação ao tipo de tratamento, constatou-se uma distribuição bastante variada, incluindo tanto medidas orientadas por profissionais de saúde, quanto tomadas por iniciativa própria dos pacientes. A combinação terapêutica mais freqüente foi entre tratamento medicamentoso e dieta. A prática de AF foi sempre observada em combinação a outras medidas terapêuticas, revelando seu caráter coadjuvante neste processo, sendo quase sempre realizada sem orientação de um profissional de educação física.
