    El poeta, dramaturg, narrador i periodista Joan Oliver (Sabadell, 1899 – Barcelona, 1986) també va conrear la traducció, tant vocacionalment com professional, en una frontera no sempre fàcil de delimitar. Després d’haver-s’hi estrenat abans de la guerra i d’haver-s’hi exercitat força durant l’exili a Xile, en tornar a Catalunya, el 1948, va maldar per convertir l’afecció en ofici, a redós de diverses empreses i iniciatives (com el Diccionario literario Bompiani o l’Agrupació Dramàtica de Barcelona), fins que el 1963 va entrar com a director literari a l’editorial Proa. Va dur-ne el timó vint anys i s’hi va atribuir, entre d’altres, el paper de supervisor lingüístic dels llibres que hi havien de sortir publicats. Ho il·lustra el mecanoscrit de la traducció de Josep M. Corredor d’Els mots (1965), de Jean-Paul Sartre, amb nombroses i substancials esmenes d’Oliver (les quals, de retruc, van comportar una sonada polèmica a les pàgines de la revista Serra d’Or).

    A poet, playwright, fiction writer and journalist, Joan Oliver (Sabadell, 1899 - Barcelona, 1986) also worked as a translator, both by vocation and by profession, with a fine line between the two. He began translating before the Spanish Civil War and worked extensively as a translator in exile in Chile. When he returned to Catalonia, in 1948, he worked hard to turn his hobby into a profession under the umbrella of several projects and initiatives, including a literary dictionary (Diccionario literario Bompiani) and the theatre association Agrupació Dramàtica de Barcelona, before becoming literary editor for the publishing house Proa. He remained at the helm of the publishing house for 20 years, his responsibilities including that of linguistic supervisor for books to be published. Evidence for this is found in the manuscript of Josep Maria Corredor’s translation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s The Words (1965), which contains numerous substantial edits by Oliver (which, in turn, led to a high-profile controversy played out in the pages of the journal Serra d’Or).
