Resumen de ¿Mejores o Iguales? Comentarios a “Democracia e Igualdad Política” de Graciela Vidiella

La democracia deliberativa surgió como una concepción de la legitimidad democrática que, contrariamente a la democracia agregativa, fuera sensible a las numerosas desigualdades que afectan los intercambios intersubjetivos entre ciudadanos y ofreciera alguna justificación para limitar que el poder social desigual se traslade al campo político. En un importante texto, “Democracia e Igualdad Política”, Graciela Vidiella especifica algunas condiciones de justicia social que deben cumplirse para que esta concepción honre su promesa. En este texto, intento mostrar - a través del problema de la tentación epistócrata y el problema del espacio deliberativo - que, si bien esas condiciones igualitarias tienen relevancia, el problema central del igualitarismo en la democracia deliberativa radica en la configuración de los espacios donde se produzcan los intercambios comunicativos.

Deliberative democracy emerged as a conception of democratic legitimacy that, unlike aggregative democracy, was sensitive to the several inequalities that affect the intersubjective communications between citizens and, at the same time, could offer some justification to limit the translation of unequal social power in unequal political power. In an important contribution to deliberative democracy, “Democracy and Political Equality”, Graciela Vidiella specifies some conditions of social justice that must be satisfied for this conception fulfilled its own promise. In this paper, I aim to show – through the analysis of the epistocrat temptation problem and the deliberative site problem that although those egalitarian conditions are relevant and important, the central problem of deliberative democracy egalitarianism is how to configure the spaces for the discursive formation of a public will.
