    La implantación del Seguro de maternidad en España tiene su génesis en las conferencias de 1917 y 1922 como germen del seguro “más minoritario, rápido y barato y socialmente el más importante de todos”. Este artículo pretende mostrar, desde la narrativa socio-histórica, la relación de los inicios del subsidio y posterior seguro de maternidad con la pobreza, el trabajo y las condiciones de vida que tiene la clase obrera femenina, todo ello en el contexto incipiente del “higienismo social” que pretende dar una respuesta al conflicto social desde la preocupación por la salud pública. La metodología utilizada se refiere a la revisión bibliográfica minuciosa sobre el tema, un examen exhaustivo de la documentación municipal existente en el Archivo Histórico Municipal de Elche (AHME) y prensa histórica y un tercer momento en el que se efectuó una búsqueda en recursos electrónicos y bases de datos (CUIDEN, SCIELO y DIALNET).

    The introduction of maternity insurance in Spain has its genesis in the conferences of 1917 and 1922 as the germ of the insurance "most minority, fastest and cheapest and socially the most important of all". This article aims to show, from the socio-historical narrative, the relation ship between the beginnings of the subsidy and subsequent maternity insurance to poverty, work and the living conditions of the female working class, all in the incipient context of the "social hygiene" that aims to respond to social conflict from concern for public health. The methodology used refers to a thorough bibliographic review on the subject, an exhaustive examination of existing municipal documentation in the Municipal Historical Archive of Elche (AHME) and historical press and a third moment in which a search was carried out in the electronic resources and databases (CUIDEN, SCIELO and DIALNET).
