There is a wide variety of phenomena related to different fields of science for which spatial characteristics of the domain where they take place are relevant. Most of them can be modelled byrandom fields, which provide significant information about spatial or spatiotemporal dynamicsof the process. This work introduces some basic formal aspects about random fields theory, like its definition, as a generalization of stochastic processes, covariance function and variogram.Different scenarios, about both spatial and spatiotemporal frameworks, are illustrated by a simulation. Finally, some continuing research open lines are outlined.
