Resumen de Retratos da família escrava no Espírito Santo (1790-1871)

  Around the time of abolition, the state of Espírito Santo remained closely linked to slavery. This situation, and also the fact that the territory still had regions with very different characteristics within the same administrative management, changes into a privileged locus for researches relating to slavery. Taking advantage of this situation, we investigated the profile and stability of slave families - whose existence is no longer subject to debate, since it has been amply confirmed - in the Central and Southern region of the Province of Espirito Santo, trying to understand the differences and similarities between the scenarios of smallholdings and the ones dominated by large coffee farms, since the end of the Colony (1790) until the liberation of all newborn children of the captive women (1871). The sources used by researchers of slave families, and also this research, emphasize quantitative and demographic analysis. However, even if they seem “portraits”, revealing only a brief moment of those people’s lives, they allowed us to know some of their stories, basing considerations on the subject.

  Às vésperas da Abolição, o Espírito Santo permanecia intimamente ligado à escravidão. Essa situação, somada ao fato do território possuir regiões com características bastante diferentes dentro do mesmo recorte administrativo, o transforma em locus privilegiado para a pesquisa referente à escravidão. Aproveitando tal situação, investigamos o perfil e a estabilidade da família escrava – cuja existência não é mais assunto a ser debatido, posto que amplamente confirmado – nas Regiões Central e Sul da Província capixaba, procurando perceber as diferenças e semelhanças entre os cenários de pequenas propriedades e aquele dominado pelas grandes fazendas cafeeiras, desde o final da Colônia (1790) até a libertação do ventre das mulheres cativas (1871). As fontes utilizadas pelos pesquisadores da família escrava, e também por este trabalho, privilegiam análises quantitativas e demográficas. Contudo, ainda que se assemelhem a “retratos”, revelando apenas um breve instante da vida daquelas pessoas, elas permitiram conhecer um pouco de suas histórias, embasando considerações sobre o tema.
