In this paper we analyze the possibility of applying the Thirlwall´s Law for estimating the output gap in the Spanish economy and its advantages over other methods, especially the structural method based on production function Cobb – Douglas and NAIRU. According to the Thirlwall´s Law growth potential of a country it is given by the rate of export growth, as they will provide aggregate demand and financial resources to sustain their growth. According to our study, the application of the Law Thirlwall allows to date business cycles analogous to those of other methods results, has characteristics similar to those of other methods and their implementation is simpler statistical properties that based on the Cobb function method .
