  Este ejercicio de investigación estudia aspectos del complejo proceso de enseñanza/ aprendizaje del español como lengua extranjera (ELE). Utilizando el análisis del discurso, se analizó un curso ELE tomado por dos estudiantes universitarios norteamericanos y dictado por tres docentes hispanohablantes en una capital suramericana. Este análisis muestra el proceso de enseñanza/aprendizaje del curso, considerando los resultados obtenidos a través de una prueba estandarizada al inicio, la planificación y desarrollo de las sesiones durante, así como los resultados obtenidos al final del curso. Estos datos se triangularon con datos obtenidos a través de observaciones aleatorias de los estudiantes en su interacción con hablantes nativos en el sitio de estudio, así como entrevistas no estructuradas a dichos hablantes. El análisis combina elementos de la Lingüística Sistémico Funcional y de la Teoría Sociocultural. Además, se muestra el nivel de lengua de cada participante al inicio y final del curso. Finalmente, el ejercicio invita a considerar el proceso de enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas como uno complejo que demanda de enfoques no lineales, no solo para su investigación sino para la práctica diaria en cada situación de aprendizaje, sea esta en un salón de clase o a través de medios y modalidades menos tradicionales.

  This research exercise studies aspects of the complex process of teaching / learning Spanish as a foreign language (ELE for its acronym in Spanish). Using discourse analysis, an ELE course taken by two North American university students and taught by three Spanishspeaking teachers in a South American capital was analysed. This analysis shows the teaching / learning process of the course, considering the results obtained through a standardized test at the beginning, the planning and development of the sessions during the course, as well as the results obtained at the end of the course. The data was cross referenced with data obtained through random observations of the students in their interaction with native speakers at the study site, as well as unstructured interviews with some of those speakers. The analysis combines elements of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Sociocultural Theory. In addition, the language level of each participant is shown at the beginning and at the end of the course. Finally, the exercise invites us to consider the language teaching / learning process as a complex one that demands non-linear approaches, not only for research but also for daily practice in each learning situation, be it in a classroom or through of less traditional means and modalities
