This paper analyses the habits, utensils and products of grooming and personal care employed by the elites of Seville in the first half of the 16th century, when the city’s port became the gateway to the Indies. This involves distinguishing between wet and dry routines of bodily care and cleansing, as well as processes related to cosmetics and hair care, often also performed in pursuit of medicinal benefits. We also take into account the importance of perfume production, which often took place in the domestic space and resulted in fragrances applied both to the body and the home environment.
