    En la sociedad medieval la mujer fue educada para hacer labores secundarias como el hogar, el cuidado de los hijos, la gestación o el matrimonio. Sin embargo, no fueron pocas las que consiguieron salir de esto y convertirse en escritoras, místicas, médicas, escultoras, iluminadoras, pintoras, poderosas reinas, incluso combatientes en guerras y cruzadas. A pesar de que muchas de ellas fueron silenciadas, muchas otras consiguieron salir del anonimato, mujeres valientes que no quisieron ser olvidadas y que serán recordadas en este trabajo. Es importante recordar que, debido al sistema patriarcal y la misoginia medieval, muy pocas mujeres estudiaban y aprendían a leer y a escribir, las que lo consiguieron, sobre todo, fueron mujeres con un buen nivel económico y social o mujeres de la Iglesia como abadesas. No será hasta el Renacimiento cuando nos empiece a llegar mayor número de testimonios, firmas y autorretratos de ellas. Pese a ello, hay mujeres artistas muy destacadas anteriormente, y esta investigación se centrará fundamentalmente en ellas. El artículo se divide en las diferentes etapas artísticas de la Edad Media. En primer lugar, la Alta Edad Media (siglo del V al X); posteriormente la Plena Edad Media (siglo del XI al XIII); finalmente la Baja Edad Media (siglo del XIV al XV).

    Women in the medieval society were taught good manners in taking care of their homes, their children, pregnancy, or marriage. However, not a few of them made it to get rid of it and become writers, mystics, medics, doctors, sculptors, painters, powerful queens, and even crusaders and war soldiers. Despite many of them being silenced, many others left the anonymity behind. Courageous women who never meant to be forgotten and will be remembered in this work. It’s key to consider that due to the patriarchal system, as well as the medieval misogyny, only a few women were able to study and learn to read and write. The ones who succeeded belonged to wealthy families with high social standards, or to the Church, like the abbesses. The Renaissance will bring more women testimonies, signatures, and self-portraits. However, there are many relevant female artists before this period, and this work will focus on them. The article goes through the different Middle Ages artistic periods: from the Early (5th-10th century) to the High (11th-13th century) and finally the Late Middle Ages (14th-15th century).
