  • Resumen
    • This chapter examines not only TikTok’s presence as an – in conventional terms, unaccountable – ‘educative’ source, but also the ways in which TikTok can be and indeed has been sourced for data by researchers. It looks firstly at the problems inherent in using TikTok as a source; it then discusses the degree to which TikTok is genuinely innovative, and the ways in which, perhaps, its ease of use and interactivity functions might to some extent mask its similarity to older forms. It then looks at a range of examples of Australian TikTok users exploring ‘Australianness’, in terms of understanding U.S. pop culture, and in exploring one’s own city, in this case Melbourne – by dint of the present writer’s location in this, Australia’s second-largest city. It concludes with observations on the importance of a TikTok perspective in research and understanding of senses of place in the age of social media.
