    This contribution analyzes the theme of digital culture in the teachings of Pope Francis. Human communication is crucial in Francis’ speeches, who insistently questions whether digital culture and technological advances really promote true human communication – the culture of encounter – or whether they are just new obstacles to achieving it. Although the digital is not one of the strongest themes of his magisterium, as are other social issues, its elements appear on several occasions. Here, Francis’ thought within the social and academic context on digital culture is articulated with elements of Catholic Social Teaching. This paper illustrates the evolution of the topic in his pontificate and argues that Francis’ view on digital culture is directly related to his critique of the technocratic paradigm.

    Esta contribuição analisa o tema da cultura digital no magistério do Papa Francisco. A comunicação humana é um ponto central para ele, que questiona com insistência se a cultura digital e os avanços tecnológicos promovem realmente uma comunicação humana verdadeira – a cultura do encontro – ou se são apenas novos obstáculos para alcançá-la. Embora o digital não seja um dos temas mais fortes de seu magistério, como são outras questões sociais, seus elementos aparecem em diversas ocasiões. Articula-se, aqui, o pensamento de Francisco dentro do contexto social e acadêmico sobre a cultura digital, com elementos da Doutrina Social da Igreja, e ilustra-se a evolução do tema neste pontificado. Argumenta-se que a visão de Francisco sobre a cultura digital está diretamente relacionada à sua crítica ao paradigma tecnocrático.
