  • Resumen
    • Upper Cenozoic sections of the tropical Atlantic (DSDP, Legs 1, 2, 4 and deepsea cores) are divided into six biostratigraphic intervals. These intervals are correlated with published zonations applicable to tropical areas and to the Italian section. Faunas and species ranges differ in some cases with those of the Pacific. Differences in the faunas of the two regions are related to the formation of the Panama land bridge (Woodring, 1966). Subsequent similarities between the faunas depend on access between the regions and ability to survive. Climatic fluctuations may have caused an alternating presence and absence of some species in the Atlantic upper Cenozoic (Kaneps, 1970). Notes on species are included.
