The coiling direction of G. truncatulinoides (D'ORBIGNY) and of G. gr. hirsuta (D'ORBIGNY) are imprinted in the Upper Pleistocene and the Holocene of several cores obtained in the Gulf of Gascony.
These observations permit us to distinguish precisely the various stratigraphic stages of Würm, controlled by moderate to warm climatic conditions, and to distinguish two phases in the Holocene.
The cycle direction of G. gr. hirsuta seems to be directly influenced by temperature that of G. truncatulinoides (D'ORBIGNY) should depend on several other factors besides temperature, namely salinity and depth, which are generally unknown.
