Resumen de Quality of life in residential environments

Goda Perlaviciute, Linda Steg

  • This paper proposes a different approach to study residential well-being, i.e. a quality of life (QoL) approach, that complements common approaches in this area. Under this approach, residential well-being is defined and studied as the extent to which important needs and values of residents are satisfied under given residential conditions. We argue that measuring QoL in a particular neighbourhood helps to assess residential well-being, to explain what determines residential well-being, and to identify which changes may improve residential well-being in that neighbourhood. In a study on the QoL of residents in Groningen (the Netherlands), we provided initial support for the applicability of the QoL measure to study residential well-being and demonstrated how the QoL approach may serve the functions discussed above.
