Resumen de Los sanatorios antituberculosos en España: Interrogantes sobre su arquitectura

Desde que en 1882 se descubriera el bacilo de la tuberculosis, se desencadena una carrera científica por vencer a una enfermedad que se convirtió en la primera mitad del siglo XX en la primera causa de mortalidad en España. Una de las medidas para luchar contra esta enfermedad fue la puesta en marcha por parte del Patronato Nacional Antituberculoso de un ambicioso plan de construcciones que consiguiera crear una completa red de sanatorios donde alojar y atender en las mejores condiciones posibles a los enfermos. Estudios como los del doctor Bassols o Valenzuela comenzaron a crear las bases documentales para establecer y dar a conocer tanto a médicos como arquitectos los lugares y condiciones más idóneas para construir estos sanatorios.
¿Dónde se construyeron finalmente estos gigantes de la sanidad española? ¿En qué situación se encuentra actualmente este legado arquitectónico y cultural de nuestra historia? Muchas de las piezas hoy heredadas y diseminadas por todo lo ancho del territorio español se encuentran en un alarmante estado de abandono. Este artículo pretende otorgar justicia a todo el conjunto de la operación de diseño y construcción del PNA sacando a la luz una obra realmente espectacular que recorre toda la geografía española.

Since the discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus in 1882, a scientific race has been unleashed to defeat a disease that became the leading cause of death in Spain in the first half of the 20th century. One of the measures to fight this disease was the implementation by the National Anti-Tuberculosis Board of an ambitious construction plan that managed to create a complete network of sanatoriums to accommodate and care for patients in the best possible conditions. Studies such as those done by Dr. Bassols or Valenzuela began to create the bases to establish and make known to both doctors and architects the most suitable places and conditions to build these sanatoriums.
Where were these giants of Spanish healthcare finally built? What is the current situation of this architectural and cultural legacy of our history? Many of the pieces today inherited and scattered throughout the Spanish territory are in an alarming state of abandonment. This article aims to give justice to the entire design and construction operation of the PNA, bringing to light a truly spectacular work that covers the entire Spanish geography.
