Virgulinella fragilis n. sp. is described from Recent sediments from Wellington Harbour. The species occurs at depths of 16 to 31 metres, in silty to sandy muds; bottom salinities are normally 33.5 to 34.5 per mille, and temperatures range seasonally from 11 to 18° C. This is the first record of the genus Virgulinella from Pleistocene or Recent sediments, and from New Zealand either living or fossil.
