Resumen de Recent Foraminifera from Tobado Island, West Indies

Sally S. Radford

  • The major marine environments around the Island of Tobago in the southern Caribbean Sea are described and the distribution of the dominant living foraminifera given for each of the habitats studied. A distinct assemblage is developed in each habitat and may thus be used as an indicator of the depositional environment.

The ecological factors which have the greatest influence on the geographic distribution of the foraminifera are salinity fluctuations, size and composition of the sediment, nature and stability of the substrate, food supply and degree of separation from the sea.

Comparisons are made with other Caribbean Islands and indicate that the Tobago faunas are widespread in the West Indian region .
