    La variedad arquitectónica y urbana que caracteriza a las ciudades del Magreb es inseparable de su identidad. Parece obvio que esta diversidad y multiplicidad de identidades diferentes debe considerarse como uno de los mayores valores culturales y humanos. La convivencia de formas en el tiempo y el espacio, las mezclas entre culturas urbanas y arquitectónicas, las múltiples influencias y contactos, incluso los con-trastes y contradicciones identitarias existentes en el ámbito urbano mediterráneo, reflejan la superposición de capas dentro de la ciudad, con sus implicaciones prácticas y significados identitarios. Hoy, en un amplio marco de competencia y atractivos entre los lugares, varias ciudades del Magreb están atravesando un período de profundos cambios. Frente a estas transformaciones, la referencia a los «territorios identitarios» y la capacidad de la ciudad para construir una identidad propia y difundirla se ven puestas en cuestión (Troin, 2004).

    The architectural and urban diversity that characterizes Maghrebian cities is inse-parable from their identity. It seems obvious that this diversity and multiplicity of di-fferent identities are to be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human va-lues. The cohabitation of forms in time and space, the mixtures between urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, or even the contrasts and identi-ty contradictions that are revealed in the Mediterranean urban territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatic implications and identity meanings. Today, in a context of competition and attractiveness between territories, several Maghrebian cities are undergoing a period of profound change. In the face of these transforma-tions, the reference to “identity territories” and the city’s ability to build an identity and disseminate it are called into question (Troin, 2004).
