El descarrilamiento del Ferrocarril Interoceánico en Temamatla se considera una de las grandes catástrofes decimonónicas en México debido a los numerosos peregrinos heridos. Sin embargo, desde la perspectiva urbana, el suceso se advierte parte de la transformación del Sacromonte en un lugar turístico. Este trabajo analiza los efectos urbanos del ferrocarril y la modernización del santuario en la ciudad de Amecameca de 1880 a 1900; este periodo comprende el inicio de operaciones del tren y las consecuencias del siniestro de Temamatla. El análisis abarca tres temas: las relaciones de poder entre el gobierno, el clero, y los terratenientes que impulsaron las peregrinaciones; la infraestructura construida para el turismo; y los cambios socioespaciales evidentes en el carnaval de Semana Santa.

The Interoceanic Railway wreck in Temamatla is considered one of the nineteenth-century greatest catastrophes in Mexico due to the large number of pilgrims injured. However, from an urban standpoint, the event seems to be part of the transformation of Sacromonte into a tourist place. This paper examines the urban effects of the Interoceanic Railway and the shrine modernization in the city of Amecameca from 1800 to 1900; this period encompasses the train opening and the consequences of the Temamatla accident. The analysis focuses on three topics: the power relations between the government, the clergy, and the landowners who promoted pilgrimages; the infrastructure built up for tourism; and the socio-spatial changes evident through the holy week carnival.
