Resumen de El argumento maternalista en la aprobación de los derechos políticos de las mujeres durante las primeras discusiones de Brasil y Uruguay a 90 años de su legislación

Este artículo analizará los principales argumentos desarrollados en las primeras discusiones que se realizaron sobre el voto de las mujeres en Brasil y Uruguay desde una perspectiva de género y de historias cruzadas. Se busca visibilizar las primeras discusiones latinoamericanas al respecto de los derechos políticos de las mujeres, así como comparar las distintas realidades y encontrar los puntos de conexión y de diferencias. Se rastrean algunos pensadores que influyeron sobre los diputados que presentaban y discutían los proyectos de ley. Las fuentes trabajadas son los Anales de la Constituyente de Brasil, de las Cortes en Portugal, de la Cámara de Diputados de Uruguay y las obras de autores positivistas que fueron citados por los propios parlamentarios. Los resultados de este análisis se expresan en el diálogo que los diputados hicieron con autores internacionales citados que influyeron en la clase política de ambos países. Identificar y analizar el argumento de la maternidad como condición fundamental para otorgar los derechos políticos fue uno de los aportes de este artículo.

In this article, the main arguments developed in the first discussions made on women’s suffrage in Brazil and Uruguay will be analyzed from a gender and interlinked stories perspective. The intent is to make the first discussions in Latin America as regards women’s political rights visible, as well as comparing different realities and finding commonalities and contrasts. We will ascertain some of thinkers that were influential on the lawmakers that presented and discussed bills. Sources used include the Annals of the Constituent Assembly of Brasil, of the Courts of Portugal, of the lower house of Uruguay and the works of positivist authors that were quoted by the members of Parliament themselves. The results of this analysis are expressed in the dialogue between the lawmakers and the international authors quoted that influenced the political class of both countries. One of the contributions of this article is the identification and analysis of maternity as a fundamental condition to give political rights.
