The formation of the peninsular peoples was examined by Bosch Gimpera in his work on the Palaeethnology of the Iberian Peninsular (1974). Other authors such as Mendes Correa (1933), Caro Baroja (1946), Maluquer de Motes (1954) have also examined this aspect ofpeninsular Protohistory, reflecting the research of their time.
A re-examination of the subject demands a collective reassessment. In the indigenous culture of central and southern Portugal attention must be paid to the variables associated with this vast region: classical authors, linguistic and archaeological evidence and ideological and religious aspects. It is also necessary to consider the lacunae and inaccuracies of the classical sources with regard to the peoples of the peninsular and their territories, since they were written without great detail and only fragments have survived, On the other hand, the limitations of archaeological research itself must be evaluated because the amount of information varies according to the areas studied.
