  Las fuentes literarias aluden en el S.E. a dos grupos de pueblos, cuya diferenciación es más cronológica que geográfica; las más antiguas nombran, de sur a norte, a los Mastienos, Gimnetas y Sicanos, y también a los Esdetes e Ilaragautes, aunque estos últimos sin ubicación concreta. Las de época imperial, mencionan, también de sur a norte, a los Bastetanos, Contestanos, Edetanos e Ilercaones, además de unos muy dudosos Deitanos. La ubicación geográfica concreta de estos pueblos es difícil de realizar, aunque las fuentes de época imperial son relativamente precisas siempre que existían ríos como límites concretos: el Júcar entre Contestania y Bastetania y el Ebro entre Edetanos e Ilercaones. Los límites interiores con Bastetanos, Edetanos y Celtíberos son menos precisos. El área más controvertida es la meridional, donde se citan a los Bastetanos, Contestanos y -quizá- Deitanos. Se plantea que el territorio de la Contestania podría ser más extenso de lo que se ha supuesto, desbordando los límites de los ríos Segura y Vinalopo que -sobre todo el primero- no son citados por Plinio e incluiría, según atestiguan varios autores clásicos, la ciudad de Carthago Nova.

  The literary sources mention two groups of tribes in tite Southeast, the distinction between them being chronological rather than geographical: the earlier sources refer fo them, from south to north, as Mastieni, Gimnetes and Sicani, and also Esdetes and llaragautes, although the latter are not¡ associated with a particular area. The most recent sources, from the colonial era, mention, also from south to north, Bastetani, Contestani, Edetani and Ilercaoni, and also some very dubious Deitani.

  The specific geographical location of these trites is difficult, although from the sources of the imperial era it can be determined whether identifiable rivers acted as limits, such os the Júcar belween Contestania and Rastetania and the Ebro betweent the Edetani and Ilercaoni. The internal limits relating to Bostetani.

  Sedetani and the Celtiberians are less precise.

  The most controversial area is the south, where Basteiani, Contestani and, perhaps Deitani, are cited.

  It is argued that Contestania could be larger than previously thought, extending beyond the limits of the Segura and Vinalopó rivers, wich were not mentioned by Pliny, since, according to some classical authors, it would have included the city of Carthago Nova.
