A imagen y semejanza de lo instaurado en la metrópoli, en los territorios de la América española y Filipinas se levantaron, desde el inicio de la colonización e integradas por los vecinos, debido a la carencia de tropas regulares, una serie de fuerzas para su defensa ante los ataques piráticos o de diversas naciones europeas, fuerzas a las que se dotaría de una reglamentación a partir del último tercio del siglo XVIII, tras el envío de regimientos peninsulares y la creación de otros con carácter fijo, convirtiéndose en auxiliares de estos. Así nacieron las «Milicias Disciplinadas» y, posteriormente, los «Cuerpos de Voluntarios», con matices diferenciales entre ambas instituciones.
Dentro de los segundos aunque con escasa vinculación a la Real Armada, en Manila se constituyeron algunas unidades de este tipo que, bajo el nombre de «Guerrillas Navales», lucharían contra el independentismo en el archipiélago filipino (1896-1898).

This is how the «Disciplined Militias» and, later, the «Volunteer Corps» were born, with differential nuances between both institutions.
Within the latter, although with little ties to the Real Armada, some units of this type were formed in Manila which, under the name of «Naval Guerrillas», would fight against the independence movement in the Philippine archipelago (1896-1898).
