  • Resumen
    • Biostratigraphic studies of the Paleocene strata from some subsurface sections in the Western Desert and from outcrop continuous classic localities in the Nile Valley are carried out.

Previously, these sections have been dated by means of planktonic foraminifera. The detailed investigation carried out on the nannofossils encountered in these sections led to distinguish 10 calcareous nonnoplankton zones.

The zonal scheme presented in this paper, illustrates the basis of a standard nannofossil zonation for the Paleocene interval in Egypt. Modification and refinements in the previously local proposed schemes have been prompted by the recognition of nannofossil datums.

The proposed nannoplankton zones are correlated with their equivalent planktonic foraminiferal zones for high biostratigraphic resolution. The proposed zonal scheme is correlated too, with the established nannoplankton zonations elsewhere.

This substantiates the world wide applicability of the proposed scheme in Egypt, and its ability in the Paleocene biostratigraphic correlation.
