  • Resumen
    • The ages of the formations in the Miocene basin of Vence have for the past two decades been a subject of controversy. According to earlier workers, sedimentation in the basin commenced during the Burdigalian, the Marly Formation being Helvetian in age. Other authors feel, however, that sedimentation commenced earlier.

On the basis of the association of planktonic foraminiferal species contained in it, the present paper assigns the Marly Formation to the Aquitanian stage (probably Mid-Aquitanian). These species, Globigerina ciperoensis, Globigerinoides primordius, G. immaturus, G. trilobus and Globorotalia nana occur together in the lower part of the formation.

Other lines of evidence seem to corroborate this age assignment. A total revision of the earlier age assignment for all other formations in the basin is consequently suggested.
