L’art de la peinture murale au Maroc médiéval. Bilan des découvertes archéologiques et état de la question

    Les travaux sur l’art et l’architecture du Maroc islamique se sont surtout attachés à l’étude des plans, à l’inventaire des matériaux et à l’analyse de conceptions décoratives de certains supports précis: marbre, pierre, plâtre, bois et zellige. Une telle approche a ainsi négligé un important type d’expression artistique, dit “pauvre,” celui de “l’art de la peinture murale” alors qu’il était d’un usage assez courant à l’époque médiévale.

    Les collections découvertes au cours de ces dernières décennies sont nombreuses. Pourtant, cet épiderme orné n’a pas encore suscité l’intérêt qu’il mérite. Dans cet article, nous proposons un bilan sur l’état des découvertes en la matière, depuis les premières fouilles entreprises durant les années 1940 jusqu’à nos jours. Les collections, datées entre le VIIIème et le XIVème siècle, y seront exposées. Leur ornementation et leurs couleurs qui avaient pleinement participé aux ambiances architecturales et spatiales de l’époque y seront traitées

    The work on the art and architecture of Islamic Morocco has mainly focused on the study of plans, the inventory of artefacts, and the analysis of decorative designs on some specific materials: marble, stone, plaster, wood, and zellige. However, this approach has overlooked an important type of artistic expression, known as “poor art,” which refers to the art of mural painting that was quite common during the medieval period.

    Over the past few decades, a wealth of collections has been unearthed. Surprisingly, those wall paintings have not received the attention it truly deserves. In this article, we provide an overview of the state of discoveries in this field, from the first excavations undertaken in the 1940s to the present day. The collections, dating from the VIIIth to the XIVth century, will be presented, shedding light on their ornamentation and colors, which played a significant role in the architectural and spatial ambiance of the time.
