This report proposes a series of interventions with the aim of having a positive impact on how European youth perceive immigration. First, the objectives of the project carried out in Denmark, Spain and Romania in 2022 and 2023 are presented. The most important goal was to find out how young people perceive immigration in their countries and their associated feelings. A study was carried out in which both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Its methodology is explained in detail below. To conclude, a series of actions are proposed based on the analysis and sharing of the results related to the adequacy of the communication channels young people use and the content of the messages about immigration they find there.
To achieve the project's objective, 1,500 online surveys were filled out by young people aged 18 to 30 in Denmark, Spain and Romania, distributed equally by country, and a series of workshops were held to share the results of the surveys. Some of the most important conclusions include the need to create working groups made up of multidisciplinary teams to address issues related to immigration as well as to create appropriate communication and information materials and strategies to raise awareness about how migrants really live in different areas of society. The importance of addressing issues related to immigration and cultural diversity using a holistic approach not limited to a single department or directorate general was stressed. This underlines the need to develop strategies that address diversity from the public arena and implement cultural spaces and agendas that facilitate exchanges of experiences and intercultural dialogue.
It stresses the importance of developing a common communication strategy among the different administrations to create empathy and positive messaging about immigration for young people through the most appropriate channels. In addition, work should be done with civil society organisations that are in constant contact with immigration and that can act as a mediator with youth. The proposals appeal to the people in charge of regulating legislation in each country, technicians and middle-ranking officials, social organisations, educators and instructors.
