  The paper aims to present the beginning of the development of the U.S. Product Liability Law, from its initial stage to its zenith, caused by the expansion of the indemnification provisions to victims of product defects. A few causes that are to be outlined to explain the expansion of product liability law are the apparent eagerness with the strict liability regime, the attention to the nature of product defects and the application of the provisions contained in the Restatement (Second) of Torts.

  O artigo objetiva apresentar o início do desenvolvimento do sistema norte-americano da product liability, desde o seu estágio embrionário até o seu apogeu, com a ampliação das hipóteses de indenização das vítimas de produtos defeituosos. O entusiasmo com o regime da strict liability, a atenção ao caráter defeituoso do produto e a aplicação do Restatement (Second) of Torts são os pontos centrais para compreensão do movimento de expansão da product liability estadunidense.
