Se analiza el lugar de la arquitectura civil neogótica como elemento espacial y simbólico dentro del proceso de modernización urbana de finales del siglo XIX en la Ciudad de México. Para ello, se estudian los casos del Edificio de Correos y del Banco Agrícola e Hipotecario. El análisis de su his-toria constructiva, de sus agentes involucrados, de la vocación de su espacio, así como de los simbo-lismos de sus formas góticas, muestran que ambos edificios fueron un reflejo del proceso urbano modernizador de la Ciudad de México y de sus conexiones a diferentes escalas en la globalidad fini-secular. El artículo es producto de una exhaustiva investigación sin precedentes sobre las fuentes históricas documentales en torno a estos dos edificios, únicos ejemplos en pie de este tipo de arqui-tectura dentro de la zona declarada Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México.
This article aims to analyze the place of neo-Gothic civil architecture as a spatial and sym-bolic element within the process of urban modernization at the end of the 19th century in Mexico City. For this, the cases of the Post Office Building and the Agricultural and Mortgage Bank are studied. The analysis of its constructive history, of its agents involved, of the vocation of its space, as well as of the symbolism of its Gothic forms, shows that both buildings were a reflection of the modernizing urban process of Mexico City and its connections to different scales in the globality at the Turn of the Century. The article is the product of one of an exhaustive investigation without precedent on the historical documentary sources around these two buildings, the only standing examples of this type of architec-ture within the area declared a World Heritage Site of the Historic Downtown of Mexico City.
