Aproximaciones sobre el concepto de “República” en Francisco Bilbao, 1844-1865

    El presente artículo tiene como principal objetivo explicar el ideal republicano del intelectual chileno Francisco Bilbao (1823-1865). Para la reconstrucción de su teoría se examinó el contexto de la época y de la producción de diversos escritos de su autoría publicados entre 1844 y 1864, como “Sociabilidad Chilena”, El Gobierno de la Libertad, La América en Peligro, El Evangelio Americano, como también artículos divulgados en la Revista del Nuevo Mundo. A partir del análisis de estos opúsculos, se postula que su ideario maduró y evolucionó afín a su contexto intelectual —entre el radicalismo y el socialismo romántico— y continental. Al respecto, se expone que su idea republicana se basó en los tópicos de “regeneración popular” y “gobierno directo del pueblo”, representando una oposición al ideario liberal hegemónico de la centuria.

    This article’s main objective is to explain the republican ideal of Chilean intellectual Francisco Bilbao (1823-1865). We aim to reconstruct his theory by examining the historical context of his work and writings published between 1844 and 1864. Those texts studied included “Chilean Sociability,” The Government of Liberty, America in Danger, The American Gospel, and articles published in the New World Magazine. Based on the analysis of these booklets, we propose that his ideology matured and evolved in line with his intellectual context -between radicalism and romantic socialism- and continental context. In this regard, we expose that his republican idea comes from the topics of “popular regeneration” and “direct government of the people,” representing opposition to the hegemonic liberal ideology of the century.
