Resumen de Biostratigraphic studies on the Upper Eocene Apollonia formations of N.W. Jabal al Akhdar, N.E. Libya

R.H. El Khoudary, F.F. Helmdach

  • The micropaleontologic analysis of samples collected from the Upper Eocene Apollonia formation of Wadi Bakur, N.W. Jabal al Akhdar, yielded an abundant benthonic foraminiferal assemblage, 21 species of planktonic foraminifera and 19 species or subspecies of Ostracoda.

Based on planktonic foraminifera the studied Upper Eocene sequence is subdivided into a lower Globigerinatheka semiinvoluta-Zone and an upper Globorotalia cerroazulensis s.1.-Zone (Bolli, 1972). On the other hand the dating after some stratigraphically important ostracod forms indicates a higher Upper Eocene age for the whole sequence, which is in fact not true. This result necessitates the revision of the stratigraphic range of these ostracod forms within the Eocene rocks of Egypt and Jordan, from which they were originally described (Bassiouni 1969a, b, c).
