Procedente del escudo de armas de los señores de Agorreta, pasó a incorporar nuevos elementos como la estrella, cuando esta familia señorial perdió poder y la villa recuperó el status que tuvo en la baja Edad media. La casa de Agorreta fue quedando relegada mientras que la localidad adquirió protagonismo al alcanzar la categoría de buena villa con derecho de llamamiento a Cortes. Las autoridades municipales pasaron a ocupar el puesto de honor tanto en la iglesia como en la casa de regimiento, en las que se hicieron grandes obras en la segunda mitad del s. XVI, colocando en ambas el escudo de armas, que a su vez fue adoptado por muchas casas de la villa para reseñar su pertenencia al vecindario más prestigioso.

Jatorria Agorretako jaunen armarrian zuen, eta gero elementu berriak erantsi zitzaizkion, hala nola izarra, handikien familia horrek boterea galdu eta hiribilduak Behe Erdi Aroan izaniko estatusa berreskuratu zuenean. Agorretako etxea bazter geldituz joan zen, eta herriak, aldiz, protagonismoa hartu zuen Gorteetara deitzeko eskubidea zuen hiribildu onaren kategoria eskuratu zuenean. Coming from the coat of arms of the lords of Agorreta, new elements, such as the star, were incorporated when the noble family lost power and the town regained the status it had in the late Middle Ages. The house of Agorreta was pushed into the background as the town acquired prominence, reaching the category of buena villa with the right to be called to the royal court. The municipal authorities went on to occupy the position of honour both in the church and in the regimental house, where great works were carried out in the second half of the 16th century, placing on both the coat of arms, which in turn was adopted by many houses in the town to stress their belonging to the most prestigious locality.
